Julia Polk Parham Scholarship

Eligibility criteria:

  • African American female student

  • Currently enrolled in a public high school located in Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, or Salem County

  • Demonstrates strong academic excellence

  • Participates in extracurricular activities and community service

  • Letters of recommendation from educators and/or community organizations

  • Essay submission

  • Proof of acceptance to an accredited four-year college or university

The South Jersey Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., provides scholarships to African American female high school Seniors in our service area who are seeking higher education from an accredited four-year college or university.

Since 1981, the South Jersey Alumnae Chapter has awarded hundreds of scholarships in honor of Julia Polk Parham who was initiated in the Gamma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., in 1918. During her 63 years of service, she was a charter member of the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter. She later joined the South Jersey Alumnae Chapter and served as chaplain. Parham’s civic, professional, and business endeavors left a mark on South Jersey communities and her legacy continues through this scholarship that promotes academic excellence.

The scholarship application process begins in February each year. Submissions are due at the end of March and awards are announced in early May.

Mary H. Coleman Memorial Award

Eligibility criteria:

  • Member of the South Jersey Alumnae Chapter Delta GEMS program

  • High School Senior

  • Participation in South Jersey Alumnae Chapter activities and events

  • Demonstrates strong academic excellence

  • Documented community service hours

  • Letters of recommendation from educators and community organizations

  • Proof of acceptance to an accredited two-year community college or four-year college or university

 

 

The South Jersey Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., provides the Mary H. Coleman award to a participating high school Senior member of our Delta GEMS program that resides in our service area and is seeking higher education from an accredited two-year community college or four-year college or university.

This Award was established in 2011 to continue the memory of Mary H. Coleman, who was a dedicated member of the South Jersey Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., for over 20 years.

During her time with the South Jersey Alumnae Chapter, she held the offices of 1st Vice President and 2nd Vice President. Mary H. Coleman also served as Chairperson of the Betty Shabazz Academy, Educational Development Committee, and Membership Committee, in addition to serving on various special committees.
